i'm going crazy about how so many people i know are using meta while "genocide is bad" is a popular sentiment

The TLDR: The ongoing genocide against Rohingya people in Myanmar has been fueled by largely-unmoderated hate on Burmese Facebook.

There are so many similarities to the ongoing genocide against Palestinians that it sounds like lazy writing: In Myanmar, a former British colony, the Rohingya ethnic muslim minority are largely relegated to the "Rakhine strip", an area of land often referred to as an "open air prison" in an apartheid system.

This Amnesty Internatonal post sums it up pretty well.

Facebook makes most of the money it needs to operate globally through users in wealthy natons.

What's driving me crazy are how many of my friends (1) know about this and (2) don't give an ounce of a shit. It's super disheartening.

weh

edit: I want to clarify that I am also on Meta platforms. I still have my old Facebook account and I gave up ~a year ago and started using Instagram because of how much of a prerequisite it was for hearing about events my friends do and go to. So, I'm not alone here.

I just would've hoped that there was any impetus at all for a "let's stop using this". I wish "let's stop using instagram" wasn't looked at like a weirdo sentiment

i hear you. i have zero friends and i still need to use whatsapp because it's used for everything. if you don't have whatsapp you might as well use a phone without a simcard.

it's a bit ironically funny too because this place's one of the very few countries where you can actually say that the consensus is that israel is bad, i.e., you will never get into any trouble supporting palestine (good) [but also the country as a whole is kinda antisemitic about it (bad) (like, silly shit like, everything modern is "western" and everything western is the jews. your phone? jews. burgers? jews)]
