masculinity, femininity, and representation in the media

Submitted by twovests in just_post

i've never known a lot of Social Theory or how to use the words properly

i get the feeling there's a spectrum of acceptable / represented forms of masculinity and femininity, even ones represented as "nonconforming" like the sweet and gentle mr rogers or the tough and rough bully girl persona, despite being around ever since television was a thing?

and we're also pretty much aware that these are meant to be subversive or otherwise detracting from a central ideal form of masculinity / femininity, even though we're also totally aware that they aren't subversive or new at all?

i imagine i'm not the first person to ever thing these thoughts so i'm wondering if there's some useful vocabulary here that y'all know

This is actually not something I've specifically come across in academia before but I'm not the most widely read. There is definitely the idea of different masculinities and femininities.

It feels linked to the phenomenon of non-threatening "soft uwu boys" that the internet keeps being let down by. It's a good thought tho and something that I think would be interesting to look into.
