Star Trek: Picard review (cw for spoilers and discussion of depictions of medical procedures on screen)

I'm most of the way through season 1, but haven't finished it yet.

It feels like Solo: A Star Wars Story or Rogue One, except star wars. Lots of the same kinda tech stuff, the computer consoles are the holographic flashing lights thing, it's all gritty and actiony, and feels like an excuse to being back cameos from TNG. Every episode so far I think has featured at least one callback or cameo.

That stuff would be fine, but idk I'm not big on Grimdark Star Trek. To me the fun of star trek is that it asks the question "in a pretty much ideal society, how would we respond to quandaries" and on this one it's completely tonally shifted. There's like, "badass cynical pilot dude who smokes stogies" and "security officer with a serious and not played for laughs substance abuse problem" along with a joss whedonesque "uuhh so that just happened" audience insert character. Also, some gruesome medical procedures that you'd previously have just been done with a tricorder but they show it all bloody.

I give it a... 5/10; very pretty, kind of a near change of scenery, but it's too edgy and bland at the same time for me and doesn't really do much if the stuff that makes star trek stand out.
