Thinking about future historians

Submitted by Dogmantra in just_post

Here’s a fun observation: the youtube algorithm and I assume other sites make it pretty poisonous to actually say “covid” or “coronavirus” in your video. On youtube you get demonetised, so people will avoid saying it, and if they make a statement referring to it to explain why, e.g. they have been slower making content, they’ll often just say “because of quarantine” or usually something even more vague like “because of world events”.

I’m just getting big a Land of Punt vibe. Punt being a big trading partner of Ancient Egypt that we just don’t know the location of nowadays because it was so obvious and everyone knew where it was that no one bothered to write it down (in all the surviving writing). I’m imagining a historian 1000, 2000 years in the future having access to a small fraction of videos made during this time and only knowing there was a big “world event” that frustrates historians everywhere because they all know it happened and that it caused something called social distancing, they just don’t know what it was.

my favorite innuendo for it was the game grumps calling it the backstreet boys reunion tour. wanna see how the historians deal with that one.
