is it legal to let a friend try to hack my linode server?

Submitted by twovests in just_post

goal: if i secured my server right, it should at least be safe against this one person trying to hack my server.

thing is: linode owns the server, and i imagine they have some kind of intrusion detection / SoC professionals monitoring traffic data.

problem: i don't want to get my friend in trouble with the law

does anybody know anything here? any experience?

In the acceptable use policy, they write

Vulnerability Testing

You may not attempt to probe, scan, penetrate or test the vulnerability of a Linode system or network, or to breach the Linode security or authentication measures, whether by passive or intrusive techniques, without Linode's express written consent. If you are a Linode customer and need to perform a penetration test, let us know beforehand by emailing support@linode.com.

Probably best to start there.

I'm pretty curious about whether it's could be illegal to try to hack your own computer in the cloud. I wonder if there's a precedent.

If you're running it then it wouldn't be unauthorized, so it'd be legal I'd think. If you are running an AWS or whatever then it's up to the cloud provider what they let you do.
