You really do use different muscles for walking and running

Submitted by voxpoplar in just_post

I haven't gotten out that much over the past year. I have been getting some occasional exercise by way of a treadmill I have and on that I can easily run for an hour and be fine afterwards. A little tired, of course, but not sore or completely exhausted. I went for a long walk the other day for the first time in a very, very long time and my leg muscles are destroyed after it. It's probably also due to walking on uneven ground rather than just a flat treadmill as well rather than just the act of walking on its own, but it is shocking how sore they are considering I can run for a long time.

I had a similar revelation about riding a bike. I can ride for four hours straight with no breaks, but at the beginning of the year I decided to do a ten mile walk and it took like three days before my legs stopped hurting from it afterwards.
